Understanding God Part Ten - Perfection
God is absolute Perfection. Webster defines perfection as “(a) an exemplification of supreme excellence and (b) an unsurpassable degree of accuracy or excellence.
Scripture says in Psalm 50: 2 “Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.”
I contend that many believers have forgotten the Perfection and beauty of the LORD God. When we gather we rarely talk about the beauty of the LORD and how Good He has been towards us. Just as the Children of Israel had such a short memory of God’s Goodness to them in the desert.
Psalm 78 reveals the degree of their slackness. In verses 11-17 “And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them. Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.”
One lesson from the Exodus is that God is not shy when it comes to revealing our unbelief in Him. We fail to see His Perfect attributes commended towards us. Psalm 78:18-19 “And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?”
How soon they forgot God’s provision. God gave them clear, fresh, and cool waters from the rock. God gave them manna every morning for their daily bread. He even provided quail in such abundance they could walk out into the fields and pick them up. In His Perfection, God gave the Children of Israel exactly what they needed.
Many of our churches have focused on the temporal rather than the eternal things of God. God does not have the church meet for the sake of paying the preacher or the light bill. Churches are also caught up more in the monthly business meeting rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
It was Jesus as He lamented over Jerusalem said “And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.” Luke 19:41-42
Churches have forgotten the Perfection and beauty of God and have become unaware of the things which God has given us.
David knew in Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.”
The creation of God is perfect. The works of God are perfect. His plan of Salvation for the soul is perfect.
Like king David in Psalm 84:10 “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Finally, Jesus said in Matthew 5:48 “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” God knows that our human frailty will prevent perfection in our flesh, but Jesus is speaking about your souls. The way to make the soul perfect is to call upon the name of the Lord for salvation. Once the soul is covered by the blood of Jesus that soul is now perfect.
The Apostle Paul gave a rebuke to the church in Galatia regarding operating in the flesh in Galatians 3:3 “Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” Obviously the church will not achieve perfection when its members operate in the flesh.
